SharePoint Online Communication sites

The new communication sites are being rolled out to Office 365 First Release customers.

This is the message that was sent in the Office 365 message center.

To create communication sites, you will need to go to the SharePoint Tile in the App Launcher, and click Create site.

When communication sites will be available in your tenant, you will have the option to create a Team site or a Communication site.

There are three options for release preferences in Office 365. Standard release, First release for everyone and First release for selected users. On my tenant when it was set to First release for everyone, I did not have the option to create communication sites. When I have
set First release for selected users
and added my user I was able to create communication sites. I Don’t know why, but there seems to be a difference between the two First release options.

Note: When you create a communication site, an Office 365 group is not created. However, in order to create a communication site, you must have permission to create Office 365 Groups in Outlook.

“Communication sites are perfect for internal cross-company campaigns, weekly and monthly reports or status updates, product launches, events and more. To help you jumpstart getting your message out fast, communication sites provide configurable templates for the sites and pages within. When you click Create site from the SharePoint home in Office 365, you have a choice of three initial site designs:

  • Topic—Select the Topic design when you have a lot of information to share, such as news, events and other content.
  • Showcase—Use the Showcase design to feature a product, team or event using photos or images.
  • Blank—Start with a blank site and make your design come to life quickly and easily.”
