The rumor has been confirmed. In the past few weeks we heard on the web sphere that Microsoft was planning to remove the possibility to run a public web site on SharePoint Online (Office 365), but Microsoft was very quiet about it.

This week they finally made the following announcement. “Starting in January 2015, Microsoft is making changes to the SharePoint Online Public Website feature”

Existing Office 365 customers that are using the public web site feature will have two years to migrate their web sites to another technology.

New Office 365 customers will not have the possibility to create public web sites.

Microsoft is planning to make available third-party offerings to enable Office 365 customers to easily integrate their public presence with their Office 365 service. Additional details about these solutions will be made available in January 2015.
